Workshops description

WS2. Platreef workshop Further details on this workshop can be obtained by directly contacting the leader of the workshop
Prof J. Kinnaird (Wits) email:
Judith.Kinnaird@wits.ac.za

WS3. Analytical Techniques and South African Analytical Facilities:
This workshop is aimed at highlighting and explaining important analytical techniques as well as the presentation of state of the art analytical facilities in SA. As part of this workshop 2 integrated analytical facilities will be visited.
Further details on this workshop can be obtained by directly contacting the leaders:
Dr S. Verryn (sabine.verryn@xrd.co.za)
Dr J. Richards (Jill.Richards@exxaro.com)

WS4. Earth Science Education in Africa: A UNESCO Initiative

About the workshop: Review of UNESCO's African Earth Science Education Initiative during which action plan for the Initiative will be presented and will be finalized during the October Paris Event. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to discuss opportunities that are already arising as a result of this initiative, including major efforts to build international geoscience networks for students, researchers, and teachers. There will also be an opportunity to review the work done in the Initiative and to make recommendations for future progress.

Further details can be obtained by contacting the workshop leader
Mrs S. Gaines
(email: s.gaines@unesco.org)

WS5. From books to bytes – how to make the most of the services and sources offered by your library.
More details can be obtained by contacting the workshop leaders:
Dr A. van Vuren (email: anettej@uj.ac.za) and
Mrs P. Kovatcheva (email: pkovatcheva@uj.ac.za),

WS6A. GIRAF Workshop: (combined with AEGOS and One-Geology)

GIRAF is an initiative to stimulate the adoption of appropriate information and communication technology (ICT) in the geological surveys of Africa and to help build the pan-African geoscience knowledge network. We held our inaugural meeting in Windhoek in March 2009 and attracted almost 100 geoscientists from 30 countries (26 of them African countries) and heard reports of the varying degrees of development of ICT capacity across Africa. A second meeting is planned for Tanzania later in 2011. The workshop at CAG23 is designed to raise awareness of GIRAF amongst the broader geosciences community in Africa and to collect input and ideas that could support the project’s goals. The GIRAF executive will review the scale of the task ahead based on national reports from the Windhoek meeting and highlight successes (and failures?) since then in mobilising the necessary resources and the self-help network.

Leaders: Dr K. Asch (email: Kristine.Asch@bgr.de) and
Prof. C. Reeves (email: reeves.earth@planet.nl).

WS6B. AEGOS (BRGM): (combined with GIRAF and One-Geology)
further information can be obtained by contacting
Dr. M. Urvois (email: [m.urvois@brgm.fr]

WS6C. OneGeology: (combined with GIRAF and AEGOS)
further information can be obtained by contacting
Dr. I. Jackson (email: ij@bgs.ac.uk)

OneGeology is a global initiative of the geological surveys of the world. Its aims are to make geological map data accessible via the internet to all; exchange the know-how to enable all nations to contribute; and to improve interoperability using the web language GeoSciML. The OneGeology session will include an update on progress, how organisations can participate and register, how to use the portal, and technical information on how to provide your data to the OneGeology portal.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: the 3 workshops mentioned above (WS6A, B and C) are combined into one large workshop called "Super-workshop".  Information can be obtained by contacting the leader of each workshop.

WS7. Geological Continental Scale Mapping in Africa: Recent achievements, current projects and future development.

The workshop will consist on the presentation of the most recent 1:5 M scale Tectonic Map of Africa (TMA), which is a result of a number of years of meetings and workshops mainly held in Africa and most of them were sponsored by UNESCO with the support of the Council for Geoscience and other organisations.

Further details on this workshop can be obtained from the leaders:
Dr Rossi Philippe (email : p.rossi@brgm.fr), Prof F. Toteux (email : sftoteu@yahoo.fr) and
Dr P. Zawada (pzawada@geoscience.org.za).

 New added workshopS:

WS8. Improving regional water management in Africa on the basis of geodetic water-cycle monitoring.

Umvoto Africa, in collaboration with Overstrand Municipality and Chief Directorate: National Geo-Spatial Information, invites you to participate in the 3rd Workshop of a project on “Development and Application of Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) methodology for Groundwater Resource Assessment”, funded by the Water Research Commission (WRC) and Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Further details can be obtained from the leader:  Andiswa Mlisa Director, Umvoto Africa (Pty) Ltd, E-mail: andiswa@umvoto.com, Website: www.umvoto.com

WS9: Seismotectonics and seismic hazards in Africa.THIS WORKSHOP HAS CHANGED INTO A "SCIENTIFIC SESSION" S4.6. PLEASE SEE "Scientific Program".
A new workshop is offered instead (Venmyn Company)

WS9:  “Definition of a Resource”. Leader: Andy Clay (aclay@venmyn.com).

The workshop will use a practical example to discuss how geologists define a resource. Attendees will be asked to determine resource ounces from an example stratigraphic column of a tabular orebody and discuss the mining method most appropriate for a particular orebody. Following from this, attendees will discuss what the valuation consequences are for their decisions to include or exclude waste material or adopt a particular mining method. This workshop provides attendees with an insight on how a techno-economic assessment of exploration results is performed, and is suitable for those interested in determining what the mining and financial implications are of exploration results. The workshop is presented by Venmyn, a company which is well known for drawing up companies’ Resource and Reserve and Valuation Statements.

Further details on the workshop can be obtained by contacting directly the leader of the workshop:
Andy Clay (aclay@venmyn.com)
