ABOUT CAG
THEME OF THE COLLOQUIUM “Together in Africa for a Leading Role in Geosciences”
The "Colloquium of African Geology" (CAG) is a major biennial meeting
organized under the auspices of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf). This event, which can attract up
to 600 delegates worldwide, provides ample opportunities to present advances and unsolved problems in
geoscience topics related to Africa on a continental-scale. For several years since this colloquium was
launched in 1965, it was hosted by European countries (17 times) and only few times (5 times) by African
countries (Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Mozambique and Tunisia). It is worth mentioning that this event
has never taken place in the Republic of South Africa. Considering the fascinating and the unique geological
features of Africa, we believe that it is necessary to host this prestigious event as many times as possible
on the African continent and bring Geologists to the
“Home of Geology” Based on this, South Africa presented a bid during the
22nd Colloquium of African Geology (CAG22) and the 13th Conference of the Geological
Society of Africa held in Hammamet, Tunisia, on the 6th of November 2008. The General Assembly
of the Geological Society of Africa has agreed to allocate unanimously the CAG23 to South Africa.
The CAG23 will be organized by the University of Johannesburg in cooperation with the University of the Witwatersrand, the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), the Mineralogical Association of South Africa (MINSA, a division of the GSSA) and the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) under the auspices of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf): http://www.geologicalsocietyofafrica.org .
